Stranger Things fails to top Spy X Family on Netflix Japan

Stranger things have happened.

To much fanfare, the highly anticipated fourth season of stranger things began streaming on Netflix worldwide. stranger things is of course the story of a group of young people who go for a ride… in a van and, like, hunt monsters with a talking Great Dane.

▼ Guess they didn’t reveal the dog in this trailer…

Ok, I haven’t seen it, because I like many more in Japan, aired in the hit anime Spy x Family In place. The anime adaptation of a manga of the same name follows the exploits of a delightfully difunctional family of a spy, a killer, and a seer, in which no one knows the other’s special skills and… except for the psychic girl of course.

The anime’s first season has enjoyed the No. 1 spot on Netflix in Japan for the past five weeks and even the start of stranger things 4 failed to dethrone him. This is particularly impressive as the dark sci-fi series topped the ratings in 83 of the 93 countries where the ratings were measured. Everywhere, from Bahrain to Latvia and from Chile to Egypt, people couldn’t seem to get enough of these brave kids of the 80s.

It’s also not the first time that Japan has deviated from global trends. It remains one of the few countries in the world to prefer Twitter to Facebook, and when the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens set a world box office record when it debuted in 2015, it was narrowly beaten by Yo-Kai Watch the Movie: King Enma and the Five Stories, Nyan! in Japan. 2015 also saw the release of the blockbuster jurassic worldwho held the opening weekend record shortly before losing it to Star Wars… except in Japan where he was late Love Live! The School Idol Movie for the weekend, as the following tweet points out.

A few years later when Avengers: Endgame would go on to become the second highest-grossing movie of all time, even Earth’s Mightiest Heroes failed to defeat pint-sized Detective Conan in Japan.

It’s definitely been a trend that’s been going on for years, but based on the reviews online, no one is quite sure why.

“Numbers, Japan never really got into Game of Thrones either.”
“Japan is like the TV Tokyo of the world.”
“I also remember when we denied Endgame.”
“I’m afraid it makes us look childish that animated movies and shows are still number one.”

“I think it’s strange that the whole world is into the same thing.”
“Japan is not isolated from the rest of the world. The rest of the world is isolated from Japan.

“I liked Stranger Things better when it was called Persona.”
“We’re like Netflix’s Galápagos Islands.”

It should be noted that Japan is not completely alone this time. stranger things also failed to achieve first place in the following nine other countriesas well as their own choices.

Guadeloupe- Wrong side of the tracks
Jamaica – Wrong side of the tracks
Martinique- Wrong side of the tracks
Uruguay- Wrong side of the tracks
Kenya – Lincoln’s lawyer
Indonesia – My Release Notes
South Korea – My Release Notes
Taiwan – who rules the world
Turkey – The Life and Films of Ersan Kuneri

Still, in every country stranger things was in the top 10 and in most cases was second place, so it’s probably worth checking out. I’ll probably do it when I can find the time, but I’ve never been a binge watcher. In fact, I’m still trying to find my way Lost, and I’m almost near the end. Don’t tell me what’s going on anyway! It looks like it’s going to be an amazing final, and I can’t wait to be pleasantly surprised.
